Cathy’s story

“My ex had always been controlling, and then he became more erratic and violent. When I came to Dress for Success WA I was in survival mode – just making sure the kids were safe.

I felt panicky about the future. Everything was a mess. I had an interview with a recruitment agency and I was pleading with the universe to get the job, or I knew I was going to eventually end up on the street.

The volunteer stylists at DFSWA were so kind and welcoming. Up to that point no-one was really listening to me. Their kindness broke me (in a good way).

Everything has energy in it – even clothes. The energy of the previous owner, or the exploited worker in a third world country.  But these clothes had a safe, kind energy because of the experience I had at DFSWA.

I walked into my interview feeling like I could be part of the workforce. I thought: ‘they can’t fault me for how I am presenting.’

It’s not easy to restart life from scratch, but your service made me feel safe, hopeful and confident.”
